On March 18, 2021, Haydn Society of North America secretary, Dr. Adem Merter Birson, presented on Haydn’s apprenticeship with Neapolitan composer Nicola Porpora in the 1750s at Penn State University’s musicology colloquium. The presentation deals with Italian music pedagogy, known as partimento, which prompted Haydn to write that he had learned the true fundamentals of composition in his 1776 autobiographical statement.
